Take A Hike... The Store

Our Logo In 1994, Diane Petryna read a business article that changed her life. The article was entitled "Take A Hike" and discussed the growing popularity of outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, camping and canoeing---especially among women. With a background in recreation administration, market research and business counselling, Diane decided it was time to make a change.

Today, Diane operates a unique outdoor store in her hometown of Thunder Bay. Take A Hike... the Outdoor Adventure Co. offers customers a friendly and relaxing shopping experience. The moment you walk through the doors of the store you begin experiencing "the natural beauty, freedom and adventure of the great outdoors". At Take A Hike you'll appreciate the attractive decor, the unique products, expert advice and good old-fashioned service.

The interior of Take A Hike is designed to remind you of the outdoors. The ceiling is painted to resemble a bright blue sky and, off in the horizon, you'll see lush green mountains. These distinctive murals were completed by local artist Michael O'Connor. Michael is now painting Rainforest Cafes worldwide.

Take A Hike's distinctive logo is the work of graphic designer Garry Walker of Simcoe, Ontario. Garry has also completed work for The Hudson Bay Company and Beaver Canoe.

To our knowledge, Take A Hike is the only store in North America to offer a complimentary waterproofing treatment with every pair of footwear purchased. Yes, more good old-fashioned service!

Unlike other outdoor sporting goods stores, Take A Hike has a log cabin nestled in the back filled with unique gifts for the home, garden and cottage. Among the treasurers your will find are handcrafted bent shaft paddles by Canadian paddler and paddle maker, Don Meany of Atikokan, Ontario.
